The NTRU has announced a Club based Rugby 7s Competition will be included in their annual calendar commencing in October this year.

The Summer of Sevens will be a Seven Week Competition played at each Home Ground of the six Darwin Rugby Clubs culminating in a Finals Day at Rugby Park.

The NTRU recognises a privately run Men’s 7s competition has been conducted in Darwin under the guise of Local Business Houses for over 20 years and in recent times for Junior Boy’s.

Rugby 7s is now an Olympic Sport and is experiencing enormous growth worldwide.

The NTRU in consultation with key stakeholders agreed unanimously that Clubs should now take ownership of the product.

The Summer of Sevens competition will be an opportunity for Clubs to boost revenue, raise community awareness and attract new participants to the code.

It was also agreed that it is essential for the Competition to include a Women’s and Junior Girl’s division.

Earlier this year the Australian Rugby Union hosted the inaugural National Rugby 7s Championships at which the Northern Territory competed in each of the four divisions

The Summer of Sevens will provide talent identification opportunities for representative selectors who will choose squads for the Hottest 7s in the World and National 7s Tournaments.

Clubs will also be able to use the Summer of Sevens to prepare their teams for the Hottest 7s in January.

The competition will feature 6 Men, 4 Women, 4 Youth Boys (Under 17) and 4 Youth Girls (Under 16) Teams.

The Summer of Sevens Season will feature free participation and match day entry.

The possibility of Katherine participating in and hosting a round of the competition is also open for consideration in the future.
